“Do you know where you are right now?” The voice spoke out to Nate. It was a woman’s voice, soothing as the sky itself.
“You don’t look like you’re from around here. Maybe I should be asking you how you got here,” Nate replied, sitting beneath the trees which extended infinitely across the grove.
She smiled. “Whatever question you may have, I will answer. I hide nothing at all.”
“You could be a monster,” Nate said to her, pulling his hair back. Her silent laughter in reaction to his words only provoked him further. “This area is far off from tourist tracks. Just saying. I don’t know you, so what do you want from me?”
“Haha, a monster? You believe in such things?”
“I know what I’ve seen and I don’t lie to myself about it. That’s all. You don’t have to believe in anything, but that does not make you immune to the truth of one’s existence.”
“Slow down there,” she said as she twirled, throwing her long amber-colored hair back. “On an occasion such as this, we should take the time to introduce ourselves to one another, yes? Hehe.”
“If you insist. I’m not focused on a new relationship right now, so—“
“That is not my intent, young man. Although Saint Valentine’s Day does come near, my heart is unable to give itself to another.”
“Then you know where I’m coming from. Two very difficult relationships. I feel spent. I feel exhausted. I have given up hope for greatness, and accepted a steady road ahead. I can’t take that path with anyone else beside me.”
“Cold. Your eyes look beyond what is immediately in front of you.”
Nate looked at her. “You judge me by my eyes? Perhaps I should cover them. Then, I wouldn’t have to deal with people like you.”
“What you say is one truth, yet there is another truth beyond.”
“Y-You. . . just who are you?”
“You may call me Sister, or Christina.”
“Christina? That name feels familiar when I hear it. My name is Nate. What brought me here would take a while to explain, but it can be put into very simple words–this is my home.”
“Excellent. You belong here. Your fate is twisted and ripped apart, but you are loyal to this place on Earth. It shows how dedicated you are to it.”
"How poetic. Put that on a post card,” Nate said. He closed his eyes for a moment, having flashbacks of his parents and sister. “It all comes down to family, I guess. They’re always there, so I protect them.”
“There is someone I would like you to meet, Nate. A stray time warden, she has a background much like yours.”
The wind blew through Christina’s hair, making the follicles levitate between the collapsing air.
Camilla manifested before Nate. Her shining hair glowed as a halo burst in aura above her head.
“L-Lindzey?” Nate observed the woman levitating before him. “No. You are not . . .”
‘I have her memories. I have seen her life as a projected hologram.”
“I have no idea what you said. You mean . . . you have Lindzey’s memories of us?”
“I do.”
“Let’s do it, then.”
“We will become a duo, Father Time and Mother Earth have their bounties.”
Cami and Nate merged in a formal pact of heroism, their souls divided and then placed back together again to unite as Cami the Astonishing and Nate the Alpha Wolf.
“I always sit out here,” Nate said to her. “Except when it rains.”
“That doesn’t quite answer my question,” she said, looking at Nate with her storming eyes.“You don’t look like you’re from around here. Maybe I should be asking you how you got here,” Nate replied, sitting beneath the trees which extended infinitely across the grove.
